Mazda's SkyActiv-G engines use an unusually high compression ratio (13:1 or 14:1 in the MX-5) that maximizes thermal efficiency. This characteristic requires 0W-20 low-viscosity oil meeting the Dexelia Ultra or equivalent Mazda specification. SkyActiv-G 2.5 turbo engines in the CX-5 and Mazda3 also accept 0W-30. Using an incorrect viscosity can affect knock control and Atkinson-cycle efficiency.
Mazda's SkyActiv-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission stands out for combining the efficiency of a CVT with the response of a conventional automatic. It requires Mazda's specific ATF FZ fluid to function correctly. A fluid change at 80,000 km is an important service that many owners overlook.
